My husband and I will travel Vienna on the 21st and 22nd August to celebrate his birthday. We will arrive at around 11am and leave in the afternoon of the 22nd.
Would you be able to suggest something fun?
We are staying at Le Meridien hotel. Another couple (my best friend and her husband ) are coming with us. We also have a small dachshund with us.
Thanks so much, Renata
Dear Renata,
I would recommend for your group to visit outdoor festivals and do a funwalking tour and/or a short boat ride, as closed events may present a challenge if you want to take your dog with you. On top, many of the best fun event series in Vienna have a summer break and are therefore closed in August.
Outdoor Festivals:
Film and Food Festival in front of the Vienna City Hall on Ringstrasse. It is open from 11am to midnight, with free musical and opera films in the evening. On the 21st August, you can see the opera ‘La Forza del Destino’ (8.40pm)
The Summer Stage is a free outdoor place along the Danube canal, with regular free concerts. On the 21st August, the Summer Stage Pavilion will host GuGabriel aka Gudrun Liemberger, a contemporary pop/folk/jazz singer with band. Table reservations are recommended (Tel: 0043 1 3155202)
Walking Tour:
The fun walking tours I had in mind are not available on the days you are travelling. However, the wine tour below can be fun and you can do it easily with your dog. Take a look at A Glass With Beethoven Wine Tour
Boat Picnic:
You can book at ‘moonlight boat picnic’ on the quiet arm of the Old Danube. You will get a picnic hamper with sandwiches and a bottle of sparkling wine. You can choose between a rowing boat and a pedal boat. I did the picnic years ago and it was both fun and romantic. Visit thewebsite for more information (German only).
Hope this helps!

Since 14 years I connect independent travellers to the pulse of my hometown Wien: by designing bespoke itineraries that allow you to get behind Vienna’s local charm on your own, while covering its key highlights.
Taking you a step further: To apply the insight provided here my local partner guide Claudia and her team take over when you arrive in Wien. From meeting the Spanish Riding School’s Lipizzaner horses backstage and crawling through the attic of St. Stephen’s Cathedral to exploring neighbourhoods where locals still play cards in cafés.
