Christmas Dinner in Vienna 2026: Restaurants & Christmas Day

Spending Christmas in Vienna is a lovely idea, but there is one practical detail worth sorting out before you arrive: where to eat.

On 24 December, Christmas Eve, many Viennese restaurants close early or remain closed for the evening. On Christmas Day, 25 December, the city is quieter than usual, and your choice of restaurants, cafés and attractions is more limited than on an ordinary winter day.

The good news is that you can still enjoy a festive meal, from a traditional Viennese Christmas dinner to an elegant hotel restaurant or a leisurely Christmas brunch. You can also explore some of Vienna’s most beautiful winter sights, visit selected Christmas markets and enjoy classical music.

Here is my guide to Christmas dinner in Vienna in 2026, including restaurants with confirmed festive offers, where to eat on Christmas Day, and ideas for spending 24 and 25 December in the city.

My tip: Book your Christmas meals as early as possible. Always check the restaurant’s current offer and availability before making plans, as holiday opening hours and menus can change.

Where to Eat on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in Vienna

If you are looking for a restaurant open on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day in Vienna, start with venues that publish a specific festive menu or buffet. Hotel restaurants are particularly useful options, although some reserve Christmas Eve dinner for their overnight guests.

Here are a few places to consider for Christmas 2026.

1. Meissl & Schadn: Christmas Eve Dinner in Vienna

For a traditional Viennese Christmas Eve meal, Meissl & Schadn is worth considering. Known for its classic Viennese cuisine, the restaurant offers a dedicated Christmas menu for the festive season.

If you plan to dine here on 24 December, check the restaurant’s Christmas menu and booking information for the current menu, prices and serving times, and reserve in advance.

2. Wiener Wirtschaft: A Festive Viennese Menu

If you prefer a traditional restaurant rather than a hotel dining room, Wiener Wirtschaft in the fourth district is worth considering.

The restaurant has published a four-course festive menu for Christmas 2026, priced at €75 per person. It is available on Christmas Eve, 24 December, from 5.30pm, with latest admission at 7.30pm, and on 25 and 26 December during regular opening hours.

  • Christmas Eve: 24 December, from 5.30pm.

  • Christmas Day: 25 December, during regular opening hours.

  • Price: €75 per person for the four-course menu.

  • Address: Wiedner Hauptstraße 27–29, 1040 Vienna.

This is a useful option if you would like a festive meal in a Viennese restaurant setting. Confirm the available seating and menu when booking.

3. Hotel Sacher: An Elegant Christmas Day Dinner

For a special-occasion meal in the heart of Vienna, Hotel Sacher has published a four-course Christmas Day menu for 25 December 2026.

  • Date: 25 December 2026.

  • Menu: Four courses with wine pairing and accompanying beverages.

  • Price: €325 per person.

  • Setting: The historic Hotel Sacher in central Vienna.

This is a high-end option for travellers who want to make Christmas Day itself the occasion for a memorable dinner. The hotel also offers a separate Christmas Eve menu, so check the details carefully if you are deciding between the two dates.

4. Veranda Brasserie & Bar: Festive Dining in a Contemporary Setting

Veranda Brasserie & Bar has announced a five-course Christmas gala dinner on both 24 and 25 December 2026.

  • Dates: 24 and 25 December 2026.

  • Start: 6pm.

  • Menu: Five courses, including an aperitif and wine pairing.

  • Price: €235 per person.

This is another option for a more formal Christmas meal. Check the restaurant’s current booking information and menu before reserving.

Prices and menus above are published offers for Christmas 2026, not a guarantee of remaining availability. Book directly with each restaurant and check the terms, dietary options and cancellation policy before paying.

Christmas Brunch or Dinner in Vienna on 25 December

Christmas brunch can be a good alternative to a formal dinner, particularly if you want to spend the afternoon exploring Vienna.

Restaurant Thell

If you’re looking for somewhere local to eat on Christmas Day, Thell is my first choice. The restaurant has a dedicated Christmas Day menu, making it worth checking for a festive meal on 25 December.

Visit Thell’s Christmas Day menu page for details of the menu, prices, available seating times and reservations. Booking ahead is advisable, as restaurant availability in Vienna can be limited over Christmas.

Brasserie Sophie at Anantara Palais Hansen

For a luxurious Christmas Day brunch, Brasserie Sophie has announced a Champagne and oysters brunch on 25 December 2026, priced at €169 per person. The offer includes a buffet, live cooking stations, Champagne, selected wines and beers, and non-alcoholic drinks.

The restaurant is on Schottenring, near Vienna’s Ringstrasse. It is worth considering if you want a leisurely, celebratory meal in an elegant setting.

Check the Anantara Palais Hansen Christmas dining programme.

&flora

If you prefer a contemporary restaurant with a less formal feel, &flora is another venue to investigate for holiday dining. Check its latest Christmas opening hours and whether a specific Christmas Day offer is available before including it in your plans.

Important: Christmas opening hours are not the same as confirmation of a special Christmas brunch. Always verify the actual offer for 25 December.

Christmas Markets

Some of Vienna’s best-known Christmas markets continue beyond Christmas Eve, while others close before 24 December. The markets at Schönbrunn Palace, Belvedere Palace and Rathausplatz are among those to check for Christmas Day opening. A stroll around a festive market can be a lovely way to enjoy Vienna’s seasonal atmosphere, browse local crafts and pick up a warming drink or something to eat.

However, opening dates and hours vary from one market to another, and individual stalls may operate on different schedules.

Do not assume that every market remains open until 26 December. Check the dates for the 2026 season in my Vienna Christmas market guide.

Schonbrunn Christmas Market

Ice Skating

If you would like some fresh air between meals, look into the seasonal Vienna Ice Dream at Rathausplatz and the Wiener Eislaufverein near Stadtpark. Both are established winter skating venues, but you should check their published 2026–27 season dates and Christmas Day hours before travelling. Here are my top five ice skating venues in Vienna.

Churches and Christmas services

Christmas is an important religious holiday in Austria. St Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom) and other Viennese churches hold Christmas services, although exact service times and musical programmes vary from year to year.

If you would like to attend Mass or hear sacred music in a historic church, consult the current church schedules rather than relying on last year’s timetable.

Schönbrunn Light Garden

The Schönbrunn Light Garden transforms the palace gardens into a dazzling evening spectacle, with thousands of lights illuminating the trees, fountains, and paths in vibrant colors. Unlike typical Christmas markets, it combines artful light installations, projections, and music to create an immersive, almost fairytale-like experience. Its unique blend of historic architecture, garden design, and modern light artistry makes it a magical attraction for both families and photographers. Note that many people want to combine a visit to the Christmas market at Schönbrunn with the Light Garden, especially after dark, making evenings (like around 25 December) particularly attractive. The garden opens from 4.30 pm to 10 pm.

Classical Music and Opera

Vienna’s musical life does not necessarily stop for Christmas. Seasonal concerts and selected opera performances can be a wonderful way to spend an evening, but programmes change each year.

Browse my Vienna Advent and Christmas concerts guide and check the current programme for 24–26 December 2026.

How To Plan Christmas Eve and Christmas Day In Vienna

A little preparation makes a significant difference to a Christmas visit.

  • Book your meals first. Decide whether you want a Christmas Eve dinner, Christmas Day lunch or brunch, or a special evening meal.

  • Check the hotel’s arrangements. If you are staying in a hotel, ask whether it serves food on 24 and 25 December.

  • Plan around public holidays. Shops, museums, attractions and restaurants may operate different hours or close altogether.

  • Keep your itinerary flexible. A winter walk through the historic centre, a church visit or a pre-booked concert can fit around your meal.

  • Check transport. Public transport generally continues to operate on public holidays, but timetables and services may differ from normal weekday schedules.

If you are visiting Vienna for several days, combine Christmas Day with my guide to things to do in Vienna in December.
