1. Klimt Exhibition at Lower Belvedere: Pigment & Pixel
August presents the last full month to visit Pigment & Pixel, an exhibition at the Lower Belvedere that offers a deep dive into Gustav Klimt‘s creative and technical processes. This exhibition zooms in on Klimt’s art, revealing the techniques and tools he used to create his masterpieces. Notably, the exhibit provides Klimt’s shift from traditional pigments to early digital experimentation, illustrating how his work was influenced by both past and emerging technologies.
Alongside the Klimt exhibition, Lower Belvedere also hosts Radical!, an exhibition celebrating the contributions of over 70 women artists to the development of Modernism. With artists hailing from more than 20 countries, Radical! highlights the often-overlooked influence of female creators in the art world. After visitig these exhibitions you will have a better understanding of the forces that shaped Viennese Modernism and the transformative role of women artists during this period.

2. Free Open-Air Film Festival
The Free Open-Air Film Festival at Rathausplatz continues throughout August, transforming Vienna’s City Hall Square into an outdoor cinema with a gigantic food hall. Each evening, a diverse range of music performances, spanning genres from classical to contemporary, are shown on a massive screen. There is hardly a better way to enjoy Vienna’s warm summer nights under the stars. Add to this a variety of food stalls offering Austrian specialties and international dishes. It’s clear that this festival is a local favourite.

3. Film Festivals Around the City
August is packed with several film festivals that cater to a range of cinematic tastes: Dotdotdot Film Festival, previously Held in the tranquil garden of the Volkskundemuseum, focuses on short films. It’s an intimate setting perfect for discovering innovative storytelling and fresh voices in film. The eclectic mix of genres and styles, from drama and animation to documentary and experimental film, provides a high dose of entertainment.
In 2025, Dotdotdot, celebrating its 10th anniversary, returns to the idyllic garden of the Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art, featuring 100 international short films and guest discussions across 15 evenings every Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday—many films will be shown in their original English, while those with English subtitles will typically have German as the original language.
Additionally, Frameout Open-Air Cinema, taking place in the MuseumsQuartier (MQ), showcases a variety of contemporary films. Set in the vast courtyards of the former Imperial Stables, this open-air cinema brings modern films to life in a relaxed and welcoming environment. It’s a great way to enjoy a summer evening while enjoying the MQ’s rich cultural offerings.
One of the highlights of the MQ summer is the Frameout digital film festival, featuring outdoor screenings of national and international films, shorts, documentaries, and more. Many films will be shown in their original English or with English subtitles.
Also, do not forget to join Architektur.Film.Sommer. For architecture enthusiasts, this festival is a highlight. Held weekly in front of the Architekturzentrum. It zooms in on films about architecture, urbanism, and design, offering an unusual look at how these disciplines influence our everyday lives and surroundings. The festival shows films in English, as well as films in other languages, including French and Chinese with English Subtitles.

4. AniNite Japanese Pop Culture Festival

Alongside the musical performances, you’ll find a bustling bazaar offering African cuisine, handmade crafts, clothing, and jewelry.

6. Discover The Outdoors Of Vienna’s Coffeehouses
Particularly in August the Schanigärten (outdoor streetwalk spaces) of Vienna’s iconic coffeehouses, can be a life saver from the summer heat. From the shady trees of Café Diglas at Schottenstift and Café Ansari close to the Johann Strauss Museum in Praterstrasse to well established Café Landtmann on Ringstrasse and Café Rüdigerhof , there is a different ambiance in the gardens ofVienna’s coffee houses. Moreover, spend an afternoon savoring a slice of Nusstorte (nut cake), trying a traditional Wiener Melange, or join in one of our favourite pastimes: watching the world go by.

In the Johann Strauss anniversary year, the Garden Palace Zögernitz regularly hosts live Strauss concerts in the original Strauss concert hall. When you set off in the evening, the sun will set over the Vienna Danube and the Danube Canal. During a scenic Sunset Summer Cruise the MS Kaiserin Elisabeth, a modern and spacious riverboat, will take you from central Schwedenplatz of the Danube Canal past the Danube Island and Danube Park, the Millennium Tower and Danube Tower, as well as the United Nations Headquarters.
