Travel Vienna Like A Local

Summer Stage
Travel Vienna:
I am really enjoying your website advice, thank you very much!
My husband and I and our 24 year old son will be in Vienna for 3 nights – 29 and 30th June and 1 July 2013. We would love to listen to someclassical music but with the locals preferably and not a tourist package experience. I was reading about the St Anna’s church concerts. Do you think that would be a good experience.?
We definitely would like to get a feel for how the locals live and eat and spend their Sundays – keeping in mind something a 24 year old would enjoy.
Thank you very much, Catherine

Dear Catherine,

thanks for the flowers, am happy that you like my site!

If you want to listen to classical music that also locals attend go for church concerts such as Classic Exclusive at St. Anna’s (that you mentioned), Mozart Piano Sonatas at St. Peter’s, and Mozart and More at Stephansdom. You can access details for all of these on Vienna concerts. I have been to Mozart and More last summer and really enjoyed it. If you attend these concerts in the summer you will naturally have a certain percentage of tourists there as well, but they are usually individual cultural travellers rather than bus crowds.

Alternatively, the Wiener Konzerthaus will stage Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana on the 29th June. The Konzerthaus is very popular in Vienna and many locals (like my sister) have annual subscriptions. You can look up the concert calendar and purchase tickets directly from Konzerthaus: konzerthaus.at/events/
Am quite sure your son will enjoy it as it’s really vibrant and dramatic.

On the 1st July, the Film and Food Festival in front of the Vienna City Hall will start. I go there every year, and so do most of my local friends. There are daily open air videos of concerts and operas in the evening. This festival attracts people of all ages.

A Sunday afternoon at the Summer Stage would also be something your son should enjoy.

If he’s into action, I definitely recommend a segway tour through Vienna. I did it twice, once alone in the city centre and then with my 14-year old local nephew at Vienna Prater, and had massive fun.

Do let me know if that helps and if you need anything else.

kind regards
Barbara
