Things to Do in Vienna August 2026: Top Events and Activities
August in Vienna is warm, relaxed and quietly atmospheric. With many locals away on holiday, the city opens up in a different way: evenings linger longer, riverside bars fill with soft conversation, and culture moves outdoors into squares, parks and courtyards. From open-air cinema to free summer performances and world-class museums, Vienna in August is all about slow travel and warm nights.
1. Vienna Opera Summer
The Wiener Opernsommer 2026 brings opera back into the open air in one of Vienna’s most atmospheric central squares, transforming the Heumarkt into a grand stage under the summer sky. At its heart is Bizet’s Carmen, a story of passion, freedom and fate that feels made for Vienna’s warm July evenings.
Set against a striking urban backdrop, the production combines large-scale staging with cinematic lighting and orchestral richness, allowing audiences to experience opera outside the formality of traditional theatres. As dusk falls, the square gradually shifts from everyday city life into a dramatic open-air auditorium, where music, choreography and the energy of the city blend into a single immersive experience.
Carmen remains one of opera’s most compelling works — its famous arias, rhythmic intensity and emotional tension perfectly suited to an outdoor setting where sound and space interact in unexpected ways. In this version, the intimacy of close-up storytelling meets the grandeur of open-air performance, creating a uniquely Viennese cultural moment.

2. Open-Air Film Festival At Rathausplatz
The highlight of Vienna’s August calendar is the legendary open-air film festival at Rathausplatz. Each evening, the square in front of the City Hall transforms into a vast outdoor cinema, screening opera, ballet, classical concerts, musicals and pop performances on a giant screen.
Surrounded by food stalls and illuminated architecture, it is one of the most atmospheric ways to experience summer in Vienna — completely free and open to everyone.

3. Stumm & Laut Cinema
No language barriers with slient films! The Stumm & Laut film festival presents silent films accompanied by live electronic music. On three evenings, silent film classics and rediscovered gems are shown outdoors with free admission, with each film performed live by musicians providing the soundtrack.
This year, Stumm & Laut once again takes place at the popular and newly redesigned Columbusplatz in Vienna’s multicultural district Favoriten.
VOLXkino is a film and cinema initiative that takes place in locations that benefit little from existing cultural infrastructure — a cultural activity aimed at revitalising and enhancing urban spaces and places. Screenings are held wherever there is space, at dusk, in unconventional cinema locations such as parks, housing estates, public squares and markets.
- Date: 20th to 22nd August 2026
- Location: Columbusplatz, 1100 Vienna

4. Experience Cathedral Concerts
Things to do in Vienna August 2026. Why concerts in a church? Actualy, before concert halls became THE thing, composers like Mozart performed at St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Why? As a massive Gothic cathedral dating back to the 12th-14th centuries, St. Stephen’s possesses the characteristic acoustic properties of such architectural marvels. In a large gothic cathedral, the sound takes a long time to die away, sometimes up to 9 seconds! This extended reverberation time allows musical notes to blend and sustain, creating the ethereal, enveloping sound experience Gothic cathedrals are famous for.
Consider taking in Stephansdom’s art and architecture while classical music washes around its pillars, statues, paintings and altars.
