I am visiting Vienna next weekend (17th/19th August), 2 nights in Vienna and 1 in Bratislava. I was looking to take a ferry to travel between the two cities, but was also hoping to use this ferry ride as a sightseeing trip as well. Are all the ferries just fast ones, or is it possible to
take a ferry and explore areas like the Wachau Valley before heading on to Bratislava?
I would really appreciate any guidance you could give me.
Many thanks for your help.
Dominic
Hi Dominic,
there are certainly more scenic Danube cruises which cover the Wachau Valley and Bratislava. They are two separate day cruises (one day wouldn’t cover the whole journey and back as they are located in opposite directions).
This is a slower cruise to Bratislava and takes place every Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, in addition every Wednesday and Thursday between 22nd August and 28th October.
The boat departs in the West of Vienna at Wien Nussdorf (don’t miss the Otto Wagner designed Art Nouveau barrage) at 8.40am and returns at 10pm. The ride to Bratislava takes 3 hours and 25 minutes. The cruise includes breakfast and a four course dinner.
Boarding is every Saturday during the time you will visit.
The boat departs at Wien Nussdorf at 8.40am and returns at 10.05pm to Nussdorf. You will arrive at Wachau after lunch. The cruise offers three stops for sightseeing, and includes breakfast, a three course lunch and a two course dinner.
I hope this answers your questions. Enjoy your trip to Vienna!
Barbara.
For 15 years I have been connecting independent travellers to the pulse of my hometown Wien: by designing bespoke itineraries that allow you to get behind Vienna’s local charm on your own, while covering its key highlights.
Taking you a step further: To apply the insight provided here my local partner guide Claudia and her team take over when you arrive in Wien. From meeting the Spanish Riding School’s Lipizzaner horses backstage and crawling through the attic of St. Stephen’s Cathedral to exploring neighbourhoods where locals still play cards in cafés.
