Wachau boat trip
My wife and I will will travel Vienna and Austria in June. Some days around the Salzkammergut lakes (Attersee, St.Wolfgang), two days along Donau and in Vienna during 24 -27 June.
Our age 60+ .I will appreciate if you could propose us any plan during those days, especially at Vienna.
Dear Paul,
Congratulations on that perfect Austrian trip! Here are my suggestions.
For both locations, going on a boat trip, visiting the villages of Attersee, St. Wolfgang (and, if you have time, St. Gilgen) and walking along the shores of Attersee and Wolfgangsee are the best things to do there. My boat ride on shiny green Wolfgangsee a couple of years ago was just marvellous! For more information on what to do in these regions see www.salzkammergut.at/en.
I would spend your two days between Melk and Krems in the UNESCO World heritage site Wachau Valley. Melk is famous for its splendid baroque abbey which is just towering along the Danube. And Krems is a nice medieval town with loads of small wineries. Again, I would consider doing a boat trip, as the season and scenery are perfect for this. You may have seen my suggestion for a Wachau boat trip. My favourite winery just across the bridge on the other side of Krems is theNikolaihof. Nothing beats having a glass of wine under the huge old oak (or plane) in their medieval courtyard! Nikolaihof is also a Bed and Breakfast. www.nikolaihof.at/en
Take a few of the 24 hours in Vienna itineraries as a framework for your stay, and mix and match as you please. My tip: Start your first day with ‘Best Of Sightseeing’. I’m not sure when on Sunday 24th you will arrive but you may want to consider having a Sunday brunch under the Museum of Fine Arts marvellous marble cupola. www.khm.at/en/plan-your-visit/kunsthistorisches-museum/cafe-restaurant/
If you like classical music, visit a concert and/or an opera. It will make your trip special, guaranteed.
I wish you and your wife a wonderful trip. Let me know how it goes!
