Things To Do In Vienna April 2026: Events And What To Do This Month

Things to do in Vienna April 2026. It is in April when Vienna’s spring season kicks off: While Easter decorations at seasonal Easter markets pile high, Danube river boats adopt a regular schedule, local coffee houses prepare their outdoor seating, and countryside attractions and restaurants expand their opening times.  Apart from annual events like the Vienna Vintage Photo Fair and the Vienna Blues Spring let me share the highlights of the classical concert and opera season, too.

1. Easter in Vienna: Best Easter Markets

Things to do in Vienna April 2026. Celebrate Easter in Vienna by visiting the city’s Easter Markets at Schönbrunn Palace, Freyung, and Am Hof , which are filled with artisan crafts, painted eggs, and traditional Austrian foods. When at the Old Vienna Easter Market at Freyung, step carefully past 40,000 eggs piling up to form Europe’s largest mountain of eggs. Among my favourite places there is the Austrian Zotter chocolate stand. At the Schönbrunn Easter Market it’s hard to decide between carved Easter bunnies from the local Erzgebirge mountains, felt flowers from Lower Austria and Hungarian crochet animals. But maybe you don’t have to. As you stroll along the decorated stalls, why not bite into a gingerbread heart and sip Almdudler?

To join a small group of like-minded Easter fans find out more here.

2. Vienna Vintage Photo Fair

Things to do in Vienna April 2026. For photography lovers, the Vienna Vintage Photo Fair is a treasure trove of historical images and memorabilia, mostly from Austria and neighbouring countries. This annual event connects vendors, collectors, and institutions who specialise in vintage photography. At Vienna’s famous Museumsquartier browse through a wide array of photographs, postcards, and prints that offer a glimpse into the past. Whether you’re interested in historical portraits, architectural shots, or landscape photography, you’ll be surprised to find something that catches your eye.

Moreover, collectors can also purchase rare images and engage with specialists who are knowledgeable about the history and preservation of vintage photos. Excitingly, you can get an opportunity to have your photo shot with equipment from the 1800s. Therefore, it’s an excellent way to appreciate the art of photography and bring home a unique piece of history.

3. Spring Hiking Around Vienna

Things to do in Vienna April 2026. Lush hills, forest paths, romantic ruins, Alpine peaks and sparkling waterfalls: When you see the landscape paintings at the Austrian National Gallery you will want to step right into them.

Most Vienna visitors will never experience walking through pine woods and rocky gorges, past waterfalls and wayside shrines, biking along lakes and experience the Alps for a day.

While figuring out your preferred route isn’t easy, my local partner guide Claudia has got a few options up her sleeves: Not least because she is an outdoor fanatic and knows every rock, from the Vienna Woods and Wachau to the nearest Alpine day trips.

4. Castles And Underground Lake

Things to do in Vienna April 2026. Just beyond Vienna lies a landscape of castles, underground lakes, and culinary traditions. This day trip weaves through medieval fortresses and hidden subterranean worlds.

The morning begins at Kreuzenstein Castle, where medieval architecture rises dramatically from the hillside. The fortress holds centuries of stories, with views that justify the visit alone. From there, the journey descends into Seegrotte, home to the world’s largest underground lake. A boat glides across dark waters in this former mine, creating an almost dreamlike atmosphere.

The route continues to Lichtenstein Castle in the Vienna Woods, where tales of knights and romance cling to ancient stones. Later, Franzensburg Castle and Laxenburg Gardens offer imperial elegance instead of medieval might. The gardens invite leisurely wandering — in summer, boats circle the castle. The day concludes at popular Marchfelderhof Restaurant, well known for a top dining experience.

Opening hours vary. To make the most of your trip, try to visit on a Tuesday, and from Wednesday to Sunday.

6. Experience Puccini, Wagner and Verdi

Things to do in Vienna April 2026. From spiritual quests to political intrigue: in April the Vienna State Opera stages powerful dramas that explore profound themes. Wagner’s Parsifal unfolds as a mystical journey through redemption and enlightenment, with music that builds to transcendent moments. Puccini’s Tosca delivers intense passion and high drama—love, jealousy, and political conspiracy collide in one of opera’s most gripping stories. Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra offers a more nuanced exploration of power, fatherhood, and reconciliation, set against the backdrop of medieval Genoa’s political turbulence.

Whether drawn to Wagner’s spiritual depths, Puccini’s emotional intensity, or Verdi’s complex character studies, Vienna’s opera houses provide performances that resonate long after the curtain falls. With such varied works—from medieval politics to operatic realism— you will likely find something to listen to.

7. Reorganised Vienna 1900 collection

Things to do in Vienna April 2025. Just in time for the anniversaries of Art Nouveau and Modernism giants Josef Hoffmann, Otto Wagner and the Looshaus, the Museum of Applied Arts and contemporary Art will reopen its newly designed Vienna 1900 collection.

The permanent collection covers design and arts and crafts from 1890 to 1938, tracing the path from overcoming historicism in the late 19th century through to the Nazi seizure of power in 1938. It features works by Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, and Dagobert Peche, among others.

Effectively, the redesign will bring fresh artistic interpretation to these historic works. The architects, artists, and designers represented explored how people at the beginning of the 20th century wanted to live, work, and coexist—questions that remain relevant today. The new concept aims to make these historical dialogues more accessible and resonant for contemporary audiences while maintaining the chronological narrative that has proven effective.

8. Styria Spring Festival

Things to do in Vienna March 2026. From Wednesday, 8th April through Sunday, 12th April 2026 you can witness the annual major provincial showcase in front of City Hall, together with eleven experiential regions. The culinary offerings will be more diverse, prestigious, and delicious than ever before: For example, expect well known regional chefs to demonstrate their skills live in the onsite cooking studio. Musically and culturally, the Green Heart of Austria will be on full display—from the Narcissus and Dachstein festival royalty to traditional customs including folk dancing groups, palm branch binding, and artisan crafts demonstrations.

Date: 8th and 12th April, 2026
Location: Wiener Rathausplatz, 1010 Vienna

9. Private Tour To Styria

Things to do in Vienna April 2026. To venture beyond the Styria Spring Festival at Vienna’s Rathausplatz why not just go there for the day? The journey to Graz is about a two-hour drive south from Vienna to reach Styria’s capital, and the scenery shifts from the Danube plains to rolling hills as you go.

Graz reveals itself gradually on foot. The main square anchors the old town, with the Landhaushof nearby—a sixteenth-century courtyard that houses the world’s largest historic arsenal, though its treasures are best appreciated from outside during a walking tour. Medieval alleyways wind between the buildings, opening unexpectedly into small squares and romantic courtyards that few tourists stumble upon.

The cathedral stands as a quieter counterpoint to Vienna’s grander churches, and when open, it’s worth stepping inside. Next door, Emperor Ferdinand II’s mausoleum holds its own stories of Habsburg power and mortality. The Hofburg, once an imperial residence, contains a famous double spiral staircase that draws architecture enthusiasts.

Contemporary Graz emerges in striking contrast: the Kunsthaus rises like a blue soap bubble along the riverbank, a futuristic hall for modern art. Nearby, the Murinsel—a steel island anchored in the River Mur—offers an unusual vantage point over the water.

10. 'Harry Lime Theme' Celebrates 120th Birthday

Things to do in Vienna April 2026. Remember The Third Man movie with Orson Welles? The “Third Man Theme” by Viennese composer Anton Karas was alternately a brittle, jaunty, bittersweet, romantic, wry, and even sardonic piece of music—which fit the mood of the story and the film perfectly. Once heard, it couldn’t be forgotten This year, you can celebrate the legacy of Anton Karas and the film The Third Man in Vienna. For example, by visiting the quirky privately owned Third Man Museum, by watching the movie at the Burgkino cinema, and through themed Third Man movie tours. Special events in 2026 may also include musical performances, such as a potential concert at the Wiener Konzerthaus featuring Karas’ ‘Harry Lime-Theme’. Watch this space.
