Travel Vienna in Five Days

I will travel Vienna in May for about a week. I will be traveling with classmates from my MBA program. Your site has many things to do… but we only have 5 days!
Are there things that you would recommend as must do things? We are hoping to plan ahead for day/night life. Any suggestions for things to specifically do/see and how to dress for these events would be greatly appreciated! It is difficult to try and plan things to do, when I’ve never been to the country.
Thank you in advance for all of your help!

Dear Ashley,

I have put together a sample itinerary for you to review. Most of it is based on itineraries of 24 hours in Vienna which you may have seen, plus a few extra tips. You will find suggestions for Vienna’s nightlife in a link to my Delicious collection on the same page.

Day 1

Follow itinerary ‘Best Of SightSeeing’ in 24 hours in Vienna. Instead of the suggested guided walking tour in the morning, you may want to walk through Vienna on your own. I think the Old Vienna walk will be a good starter.

Alternatively, you can rent bikes at a bike rental firm bike rental firm(they provide bike maps) or do a guided bike tour.

Day 2

Follow itinerary ‘A Girlie Day’ in 24 hours in Vienna.

Day 3

Follow itinerary ‘Hang Out Like A Local’ between Monday and Saturday, as the Naschmarkt is closed on Sundays.

Day 4

Follow itinerary ‘Fun And Action’. You may want to replace the suggested morning bike tour with a visit to a Gustav Klimt exhibition. Klimt was a fabulous Art Nouveau painter. This year, Vienna celebrates his 150 year anniversary with loads of exhibitions. More on Klimt special exhibitions and guided tours in 2012.

Day 5

Consider a bike tour in Wachau Valley on the Danube, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Go to Wine tasting tour Wachau Valley.

Alternatively a mini Danube cruise to Bratislava in a high speed catamaran is big fun, and Bratislava is worth a visit!

Special events in May that may be of interest

Life Ball. I have been to this super extravagant ball a few years ago with a group of friends, we were blown off!

Summer Stage. Choose warm weather if you go there as the Danube Canal can be a little chilly.

Must Dos

Whatever itineraries you choose, make sure they include the following:

Vienna city centre
Schonbrunn Palace
Naschmarkt
Museum of Fine Arts and/or Albertina
Volksgarten Pavilion (my favourite summer hangout)
at least one Viennese cafe
Saturday night clubbing at Rote Bar in Volkstheater

What to wear

Unless you attend a concert at the Musikverein or a Viennese ball, you can dress casual to smart casual. Even the Vienna Opera allows smart casual, as do other opera houses and concert halls.

For best seasonal clothing, see my tips in Vienna Austria Weather.

I hope that helps.
