Things to Do in Vienna July 2026: Summer Opera, Symphonic Picnic, and More

Experience Vienna in July 2026 with lively festivals, outdoor cinema, and Heuriger wine taverns. From the Donaukanal to the Wienerwald, there’s plenty to enjoy.

1. Open Air Fun At Food and Music Film Festival at Rathaus Platz

Things to do in Vienna July 2026. For two months every year, the annual Film Festival on Rathausplatz transforms the large square in front of the City Hall (Rathaus) into a vibrant food and event space.  Between Vienna sausages, Wiener Schnitzel, sweet dumplings  and street food you can watch and listen to an equally rich choice of music.

From around 9.15-9.30 pm, the large screen in front of City Hall shows famous operas, musicals, classical concerts, jazz, rock and pop. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays 5 pm to 7 pm a live DJ blows lounge tunes past the local after-work crowd. And each Sunday, live jazz bands celebrate the Viennese’s love for weekend brunches.

My tip: Try the freshly prepared Viennese Kaiserschmarrn – warm fluffy thick pancakes in big chunks served with plum compote and caster sugar – prepared in a large iron pan.

Dates:  4th July to 6th September 2026
Location: Vienna City Hall; entrance of open air cinema via Lichtenfelsgasse;
Admission: free

2. Vienna Symphonic Prater Picnic

Things to do in Vienna July 2026. Start your summer in Vienna with a delightful mix of music, history, and ambiance at the Wiener Symphoniker’s annual Prater Picnic. Kicking off the 2026 Kultursommer Wien festival, this open-air concert is a nod to Vienna’s cultural traditions, with Johann Strauss naturally in the spotlight.

Did you know that in 1881, Strauss premiered his Myrthenblüten waltz here in honour of Crown Prince Rudolf’s wedding? This year, the orchestra is led by their new principal conductor, Petr Popelka, and features a dynamic lineup.

At Kaiserwiese (Emperor’s Lawn), the Wiener Symphoniker’s 2026 Prater Picnic features a wide crossover programme mixing orchestral classics and popular music, including excerpts such as Johann Strauss operetta The Bat, Franz von Suppé’s Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna, and George Gershwin’s overture to the musical Funny Face, plus contemporary arranged songs performed with soprano, tenor and guest vocalists.

  • Date: 1st to 2nd July, 2026
  • Location: Prater, Vienna

3. Rent A Sofa Boat On The Old Danube

Things to do in Vienna July 2026. The Wiener Opernsommer 2026 brings opera back into the open air in one of Vienna’s most atmospheric central squares, transforming the Heumarkt into a grand stage under the summer sky. At its heart is Bizet’s Carmen, a story of passion, freedom and fate that feels made for Vienna’s warm July evenings.

Set against a striking urban backdrop, the production combines large-scale staging with cinematic lighting and orchestral richness, allowing audiences to experience opera outside the formality of traditional theatres. As dusk falls, the square gradually shifts from everyday city life into a dramatic open-air auditorium, where music, choreography and the energy of the city blend into a single immersive experience.

Carmen remains one of opera’s most compelling works — its famous arias, rhythmic intensity and emotional tension perfectly suited to an outdoor setting where sound and space interact in unexpected ways. In this version, the intimacy of close-up storytelling meets the grandeur of open-air performance, creating a uniquely Viennese cultural moment.

  • Date: 1st to 18th July 2026
  • Location: Heumarkt, 1030 Vienna
  • Admission: buy tickets

5.Danube Island At Wien Museum

Things to do in Vienna July 2026. The exhibition “Die Donauinsel – 21 Kilometer Freiraum” (The Danube Island – 21 killometers of Freedom) at the Vienna Museum is one of the most fascinating urban storytelling shows of 2026, turning Vienna’s iconic summer escape into a museum-worthy landscape of ideas, politics and everyday life.

Tracing the creation of the Donauinsel from a controversial 1970s flood protection megaproject into today’s beloved recreational artery, the exhibition reveals how engineering ambition, environmental debate and social change shaped one of Europe’s most unusual man-made islands. Archival photographs, planning models and contemporary artworks show how a once “purely technical” river intervention gradually became a 21-kilometre-long public living room for Vienna.

At its heart is the story of transformation: from engineered infrastructure to cultural space, from floodplain to festival ground, from political compromise to urban identity. Visitors encounter striking visual material, including large-scale models and documentary photography that capture both the construction era and the island’s vibrant present, where cycling, swimming and open-air culture define summer life.

10.Experience Heuriger Season

Things to do in Vienna July 2025. July is the perfect time to visit Vienna’s traditional and pop up wine taverns, known as Heuriger. Located in the picturesque hills of Nussdorf and Grinzing, for example, these taverns serve wine made from local vineyards and offer a range of Austrian dishes in a cosy, rustic setting. My favourite pop up Heuriger is Mayer am Nussberg, which lets you relax in deckchairs in the vineyards while overlooking the Viennese skyline (see photo.) You can take the D or 38 tram to reach these lush suburbs, where you can enjoy a glass of wine (or spritzer) while overlooking Vienna’s serene landscape. Even though a Heuriger wouldn’t offer wine tasting sessions you can join a small group tour to explore vineyards and wine cellars, local wine making and a range of Viennese wines.
