December At Schonbrunn Palace
I am planning to travel to Vienna in December. What do you recommend I take, when it comes to clothes attire and shoes etc.
Can I drive with an American driver’s license?
Dear Marisol,
Vienna in December can be chilly. On average you’ll have to expect temperatures between 30 to 37 degrees Fahrenheit ( -1 to +3 degrees Celsius). I have seen everything between much lower temperatures, snow and wind, and really pleasant weather of up to 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius).
Hence, I recommend that you take warm clothes, warm rainproof boots, coats, gloves and so on. No need for polar expedition attire, but warm knits and padded winter gear should be fine. For further information about the weather and what to wear, go to Vienna Austria Weather.
Using an American driver’s licence in Austria: You can use your licence for up to 12 months, whether you rent a car or drive someone’ else’s, but you will need to add an international driver’s licence or a translation, if licences are not written in German. For further information, see the Austrian Government’s note on the validity period of foreign drivers’ licences in Austria. (Please not the advice given is to my own best knowledge, and not legal advice.)
I hope that helps. Enjoy Vienna!
Barbara
For 15 years I have been connecting independent travellers to the pulse of my hometown Wien: by designing bespoke itineraries that allow you to get behind Vienna’s local charm on your own, while covering its key highlights.
Taking you a step further: To apply the insight provided here my local partner guide Claudia and her team take over when you arrive in Wien. From meeting the Spanish Riding School’s Lipizzaner horses backstage and crawling through the attic of St. Stephen’s Cathedral to exploring neighbourhoods where locals still play cards in cafés.
